Where science meets restoration and livelihoods.
Aqua Guardians Tanzania is testing an integrated underwater nursery that grows seaweed above and coral fragments below on suspended ropes within the same system.
Seaweed absorbs dissolved nutrients from seawater as it grows, while the suspended coral nursery provides a controlled environment for propagating coral fragments for future reef restoration. We are studying whether integrating the two can support coral growth, water-quality management and sustainable seaweed production within the same marine space.
We monitor seaweed growth, coral survival and growth, water quality, and the interaction between the two systems to identify what works and what needs to be improved.
The goal is to develop a practical, science-based model that can be adapted by coastal communities to combine reef restoration with sustainable livelihoods.
