Our story
Restoring Reefs. Empowering Communities.
Born from a belief that healthy coral reefs and thriving coastal communities are inseparable, Aqua Guardians Tanzania is restoring marine ecosystems through science, local leadership, and long-term conservation.
Where we work
Born on Tanzania's Indian Ocean Coast
For generations, Tanzania's coral reefs have sustained coastal communities such as providing food, livelihoods, and protecting shorelines from the power of the sea. But as reefs declined, so did the livelihoods that depended on them.
Aqua Guardians Tanzania was born where the reef meets the village, inspired by local fishers witnessing shrinking catches and young people determined to become part of the solution rather than the next generation to inherit the problem.
Today, we restore damaged coral reefs by cultivating resilient corals in underwater nurseries and transplanting them onto degraded reef systems. We inspire the next generation through ocean education in coastal schools, empower local communities with sustainable livelihood opportunities, and work alongside scientists, conservation partners, government institutions, and volunteers to build healthier marine ecosystems.
Everything we do is guided by one belief: when coastal communities thrive, the ocean thrives too. By restoring reefs today, we are helping secure biodiversity, strengthen climate resilience, and create a more sustainable future for Tanzania's Indian Ocean coast.

Our mission
To safeguard the health, resilience, and future of marine ecosystems while empowering coastal communities to become lifelong stewards of the ocean, ensuring that both people and nature flourish for generations to come.
Our vision
A future where thriving marine ecosystems and empowered coastal communities flourish together, ensuring a healthy, resilient ocean for generations to come.
What guides us
Our core values
Ocean Stewardship
Protecting the ocean today for generations tomorrow. We believe the ocean is a shared responsibility. Through marine restoration, conservation action, and community participation, we are committed to protecting and rebuilding healthy marine ecosystems while preserving the biodiversity that sustains life on our planet.
Community Empowerment
Conservation begins with people. We recognize that the future of marine ecosystems depends on the people who live alongside them. We work with coastal communities by creating opportunities, strengthening local leadership, and supporting sustainable solutions that allow people and nature to thrive together.
Science & Innovation
Guided by knowledge, driven by discovery. We are committed to science-based conservation through research, monitoring, and innovation. By combining traditional coastal knowledge with modern scientific approaches, we develop effective solutions that restore marine ecosystems and strengthen their resilience against future challenges.
Youth, Women & Men Leadership
Creating the next generation of ocean guardians. We believe lasting conservation is built by empowering the next generation. By engaging youth and creating meaningful opportunities for women and men, we nurture diverse leaders, innovators, and environmental champions who will continue protecting the ocean for years to come.
Sustainable Livelihoods
Protecting nature while creating opportunity. We believe conservation and economic prosperity can grow together. By supporting sustainable livelihoods connected to the ocean, we help communities build a future where protecting marine ecosystems becomes a source of pride, income, and long-term wellbeing.

Why it matters
When the Ocean Thrives, Communities Thrive
Our ocean is more than a natural resource; it is a source of life, identity, and opportunity for generations of coastal communities. As marine ecosystems face growing threats, the future of both biodiversity and the people who depend on the sea are at risk. Aqua Guardians Tanzania works to restore ocean health while empowering communities to become active guardians of the marine environment because a thriving ocean means thriving communities and a healthier future for all.
